It was no shock, or so it seemed to me, that Danny Gokey finally got sent home from American Idol.
The Final 3 Elimination Show is the episode of American Idol where we get the hometown visits. Those always seem so contrived, or so it seems to me.
Danny went home to Milwaukee for some crying, parades, big crowds, girls screaming, the mayor proclaiming Danny Gokey Day. And then its back live where Ryan recounts the judges' comments from the night before and then sends Danny to the couch.
Next it is Kris Allen's turn to go home, back to Conway, Arkansas where the mayor proclaimed Kris Allen Day, plus Kris got awarded free cheese dip for life from one of Conway's restaurants. There's a parade through the little town, more screaming girls, some crying, then some more crying, then it's back live where Ryan does some more recounting of comments and then sends Kris to the couch.
Before we get to go home with Adam we have to, I mean, get to, listen to Jordin Sparks sing her new song "Battlefield." She's looking good and singing good. Looking all grown up in a strapless dress.
After Jordin we get to see Adam go home to San Diego where we see some more screaming girls, a lot of tear-jerking manipulating, along with Adam helping a San Diego weather woman properly apply her eyeliner, then the mayor proclaims Adam Lambert Day and then it's back live where Ryan does his shtick, Simon calls Adam "brilliant" and then Ryan sends Adam to the couch.
Next Ryan commiserates with the boys on the couch, telling them it's not his fault they have to wait so long after Danny laments that he's ready for it to be over. But before it can be over we have to listen to Katy Perry sing.
Finally the results. First person in the finale. Kris. Paula's mouth drops open. Randy does a weird bowing thing. Then it's down to Adam and Gokey. Gokey's gone. Kara says, "Oh my god." Paula's eyes bulge. And then Danny sings one more time.
Really, how could it have been a shock to Kara and Paula that Danny got the boot over Adam? That was just strange. Another strange thing, Simon saying to Kris and Adam that next week will be the "big ding-dong." Huh? He then had to translate the Brit-Speak into American English, clarifying that ding-dong means "good."
I think it's gonna be a real ding-dong of a finale.
