Haunted By The Boy In The Striped Pajamas

It is sort of rare for a movie to hold my attention til the bitter end. Or for me to be watching a movie without at some point in time finding myself wondering how much longer is this going to go on?

Contemporary movies have a harder time holding my attention that classics from long ago.

Last night, on the Sundance Channel, I watched The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It held my attention til The End. I would not say I enjoyed having my attention held, due to the fact that this movie is a bit haunting.

It is the little boy in the striped pajamas, Shmuel, who has been haunting me.

Shmuel is a Jew, in a Nazi death camp. On the other side of the concentration camp fence is his friend, Bruno, son of the Nazi commandant of the death camp.

Shmuel is played by Jack Scanlon, Bruno by Asa Butterfield. These are the best child actors I've seen in a long time. The best since I watched Freddie Bartholomew in Captains Courageous, a 1937 movie, with Spencer Tracy, which also held my attention til The End.

I am not sure what is was about this particular Holocaust drama that got to me more than others, like Schindler's List. Maybe it was looking at the Nazi horror through the eyes of a pair of little 8 year old boys that amped up the poignancy.

I am hoping I do not have a repeat, tonight, of last night's nightmares about a little boy in striped pajamas.

Vanderpump Rules With Stassi Schroeder Being Unruly

A few weeks ago I was watching what I thought was going to be a two hour episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, with the first hour ending with Brandi Glanville having had a sitdown with Scheana Marie, one of the women Brandi's ex-husband, Eddie Cibrian, had committed adultery with.

Brandi ended her talk with Scheana with the quality of the video suddenly changing, like the colors were more saturated, or something. And then I realize I'd been tricked into watching the beginning of the first episode of Vanderpump Rules.

Well, I really like the Real Beverly Hills Housewife, Lisa Vanderpump, so I gave her spin-off a chance.

I was appalled. Really really really bad Reality TV. Seemed really fake. And the cast of really fake real people seemed really unlikable.

Particularly a self-absorbed, totally un-self aware person named Stassi Schroeder.

Well, my DVR recorded the following episodes of Vanderpump Rules, with me forgetting to cancel the recordings.

And so I watched them.

Vanderpump Rules is so bad it has turned out to be good, in a really bad train wreck TV sort of way.

On one of the ubiquitous TV Forums I read one viewer opine...

This show is a delicious trainwreck. Sort of a combination of Jersey Shore meets The Hills. I actually enjoyed watching this disaster this week.

All I know about Jersey Shore and The Hills is that both are or were on MTV and that I have never watched them.

All the self-absorbed cast of unlikeable work at Lisa's SUR restaurant in Beverly Hills. With most claiming to be Mactors. As in models/actors. Or wannabes.

One of the couple pairs are both models, and I assume actor wannabes. That being Kristen Doute and Tom Sandoval. Kristen prefers not to wear makeup, while Tom won't leave home without being madeup. Kristen is not very attractive, either looks-wise or twisted personality wise. Tom looks like he shaves his forehead and says really dumb stuff.

But it is Stassi Schroeder and her demented relationship with sometime live-in boyfriend, Jax Taylor, that is the core wreck of this train wreck. Stassi is not all that attractive, though she seems to think she is Marilyn Monroe combined with Elizabeth Taylor combined with Mae West. I have seldom witnessed such a sense of entitlement. Or delusion.

Will Stassi get her needed comeuppance? Would seeing that keep me watching? I don't know. Stassi is already getting her comeuppance, viewer reaction-wise. As in she is being shredded in Internet TV forums.

I was shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that Vanderpump Rules is not the first time Stassi Schroeder has annoyed me on a Reality TV show.

Way back in 2005 Stassi, along with her mom and dad and brother, were on The Amazing Race 8, known as the Family Edition. Stassi was 17 at the time.

The Schroeders lived in New Orleans. Early on a leg took teams to New Orleans. The Schroeders thought they had an easy first place, due to being in their hometown. But they got eliminated.

A month after the end of Amazing Race 8, Hurricane Katrina arrived in New Orleans, badly damaging the Schroeder home. Fellow racing family, the Rogers, helped evacuate the Schroeders to their home in Shreveport for a temporary refuge.

I do not remember Stassi having personality problems when she was on The Amazing Race, certainly not of the memorably demented sort she exhibits on Vanderpump Rules.

I can not help but wonder if Lisa is happy with Vanderpump Rules. It is interesting seeing her play the boss role, so well, in her restaurant.

Will I keep watching this train wreck? I don't know.

Real Beverly Hills Housewife Adrienne Maloof's Cougar Makeover With Recovered Drug Addict Sean Stewart

Adrienne Maloof & New Boy Toy
Ex-Drug Addict Sean Stewart
It is a little embarrassing that a couple of Bravo's Real Housewives franchises are among my guilty viewing pleasures.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills is my favorite of these guilty pleasures, due to finding myself so frequently appalled or amused or both.

Take Adrienne Maloof, for instance. When I first met Adrienne, in Season 1, I thought her to be a bit of a snarky harmless airhead and an example of why inheriting a lot of money from a rich daddy may mess up the one who inherits all that unearned money.

By the end of Season 2 of RHOBH Adrienne took a precipitous Jill Zarin level of fall from fan grace, with the biggest reason being her bizarre accusations regarding Lisa Vanderpump, made at the Reunion Show, claiming Lisa had sold stories about Adrienne to the tabloids.

Season 3 of RHOBH has featured Adrienne's feud with fan favorite, Brandi Glanville. Brandi was a bit annoyed at Adrienne's duplicitiousness. Among the things that bugged Brandi was Adrienne sharing her childbirthing pains with the other housewives who had birthed babies.

Adrienne's 3 Sons Who Did Not Exit
Adrienne's Womb
However, apparently, Adrienne did not give birth to her 3 children. She paid someone to do that job for her. This was the BIG SECRET that Brandi told at a gathering of the Housewives, at a restaurant.

What Brandi said was not shown by Bravo.

But, troubled former child star, Paris Hilton's aunt, Kim Richards, felt compelled to tell Adrienne that Brandi had revealed the non-secret that everyone already knew.

Kim's revelation came at some sort of business event of her brother-in-law's, he being the new fan non-favorite, Kim's sister Kyle's husband, Mauricio.

Mayhem was the result of Kim telling Adrienne the shocking news that Brandi had told people, who already knew about it, that Adrienne had used a surrogate to birth her boys, while parading around town faking being pregnant by having some sort of ever growing pregnancy pillow stuck to her unused babymaking zone.

After this shocking Kim revelation at the Mauricio business event, all sorts of volcanic venom erupted, with the worst eruptions coming from Adrienne's now ex-husband, Paul, and Adrienne herself, who viciously said Brandi was a neglectful mother and a drug user. Bravo aired the slander that came out of Adrienne's mouth.

Adrienne had her lawyers send Brandi a threatening letter of some sort. Soon the Surrogate-Gate Scandal spun out of control, causing dinner parties to turn into profanity spewing battlegrounds.

And now Adrienne, who is in her 50s, is being a cougar with the much younger son of rocker Rod Stewart, Sean Stewart, 32. Apparently Sean Stewart is also a Reality TV Star, showing up on one of those Celebrity Re-Hab shows that I've never watched.

Of his much maligned romance with the much older Adrienne, Sean said, "Age is but a number."

Very profound.
