The days of American Idol being the top rated show on American TV are over. The former regularly #1 show is now regularly in the Top 20. Usually the lower tier of the Top 20.
I, among many viewers, bailed on watching American Idol last season by the time the contestants were whittled down to the Final Five, or Six.
I did not watch last year's American Idol finale. I know a girl won, I don't know her name, I don't think she has had a hit song.
With this year's American Idol I also did not watch the finale. For me the only one among this year's singers who made it to the live shows who had any chance at pop idol type success was Alex Preston, due to the fact that he is definitely a one of a kind original.
That is this year's American Idol winner, Caleb Johnson, above, sitting on a couch with Alex Preston.
Caleb Johnson seemed nice enough personality-wise. But pop idol-wise? His singing seemed to me to be totally imitative of rockers from the 80s. Nothing original about him. I think Simon Cowell would have not been impressed with Caleb Johnson, with Simon's negative critiques likely leading to Caleb's boot well prior to the finale.
As for Caleb's co-finalist, Jena Irene. Well, if you want people to pronounce your named with a long E, then spell it with a G and two E's. The letter J never sounds like Gee, not that I've ever heard.
As for Jena's pop idol-ness, I was not a fan of her singing, at times it was like she went so quiet and soft I could not make out the words she was singing. Performance-wise and entertainment-wise she was sort of dull.
And then there are the judges. I liked Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban. They all seem like very nice people. But, over the course of seeing a lot of hours of the three there were some elements I got a bit tired of.
Harry Connick Jr. at times seemed to be trying too hard to be "entertaining." Throwing beignets into the audience comes to mind. His critiques, at times, seemed sort of a bit overwrought and overthought.
Jennifer Lopez I really like. And not just because she is very pleasing to look at. But, both she and Keith Urban did something that really annoyed me.
As in more than once Keith Urban and Ms. Lopez would stand while Caleb Johnson was rocking and dance along with the music like a couple of teenagers in cool kid head bobbing mode. It just seemed wrong to me that those two would do this. Harry would have none of it, even with Jennifer trying to get him to stand and join them.
Another thing with Keith Urban, and again I must say he is a very likable guy, who seems to give good advice, at times. But, he could maybe try and expand his vocabulary a bit. He used the word "killer" way too many times. As in verbiage such as "That was killer." Or "That performance was killer." Or "Man, that was killer."
American Idol is no longer a "killer" show. I doubt American Idol will ever find another Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert, Phillip Phillips or any of the others who have gone from their American Idol exposure to a show business, or political office career.
Apparently FOX realizes American Idol's best days are behind it, and so will be cutting the number of hours American Idol airs in its next season of searching for America's next pop star....

American Idol Results Show: Paul McDonald Sent Home While Casey Abrams Romances Haley Reinhart
The guy with the radioactive glow in the dark teeth, Paul McDonald, got the American Idol boot on Thursday, but did not get the same shocked reaction as last week's Pia Toscano's elimination did.
Paul left the show singing "Magge May," while telling America to have a good time and "not be sad about this."
I don't recollect myself ever being sad over someone leaving American Idol.
In the bottom three, with Paul, were Stefano Langone, again, and Haley Reinhart. I don't remember if Haley has been in the bottom three before.
What I do remember is seeing rumors on the Interwebs that Haley and Casey Abrams had developed a romantic liaison.
When Ryan Seacrest put Haley in the bottom three, Casey said "I love you" to Haley. Earlier in the show Haley and Casey sang a steamy duet, a song called "Moanin." It struck me odd at the time, wondering why that pair got a duet. Usually it's those tiresome group numbers on the AI results show.
The original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, sang "Don't You Wanna Stay?" with Jason Aldean. Ryan and Kelly exchanged quips over something to do with Ryan doing something to Kelly's Twitter Tweets regarding Kelly having a crush on Casey. I really was not understanding. A Kelly crush on Casey Abrams? Or Casey James? Casey James is a Texas boy and seems more age appropriate than Casey Abrams for a Kelly crush.
Rihanna sang a song about her "California King Bed." I hit the fast forward button.
The only other thing I remember about the latest AI results show was this week's Ford commercial. Zombies were involved. I don't care for the AI Ford commercials. And the making of the AI Ford commercial bits. But, they have an hour to fill, so filler is needed.
I'm pretty sure Ryan said what next week's American Idol theme is, but I've already forgotten.

Kelly Clarkson Pregnant On American Idol Results Show?
On last night's American Idol results show, Kelly Clarkson sang her new song from her new album. The song, called something like "My Life Sucks Without You," shot to #1 on the Billboard charts faster than any previous #1 song.By morning dark corners of the Internet were sparking rumors that Kelly Clarkson is pregnant. I assume these rumors were sparked by how the profile of her midsection looked from some angles.
But, watching her sing last night it never crossed my mind that she looked pregnant.
Kelly sang while Anoop and Jorge were kept waiting to find out which one was being sent home. Prior to those two being kept waiting we'd seen Jasmine sent tearfully home.
Eventually Jorge was told to pack his knives and leave, but not before the Judges supposedly consulted as to whether or not to use their new rule. Which turned out to be lame, in that if the Judges unanimously decided that someone should not have gotten the boot, they can save that person. And then boot 2 the next week.
The logic of this new rule escapes me. Apparently it was an American National Tragedy that Jennifer Hudson, Tamyra Gray, Chris Daughtry and that Aussie Michael Johns supposedly got sent home before they should have been, thus sending waves of shock and anguish across the country.
Saving a person who should have been the one to go is just going to annoy people, causing the person saved to likely get sent home the next week. Then again who knows? Maybe somehow this new rule has some entertainment value that I'm not currently getting, like when the Hidden Immunity Idol first appeared on Survivor, it took awhile for its entertainment value to reveal itself.
American Idol should have a Hidden Immunity Idol. That'd be fun to watch. Or not.
